Chinese models are now among the cheapest and most capable options for many workloads — but if you are outside mainland China, the friction is rarely the model itself. It is the sign-up, the payment method, the network path and the question of whether the endpoint you are calling is really serving the model you paid for.
This guide covers what overseas developers actually run into in 2026, and a practical checklist you can use with any provider.
The largest Chinese providers run their own API platforms: DeepSeek, Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (DashScope), Zhipu AI, Moonshot (Kimi) and ByteDance Volcengine (Doubao). Going direct is the most transparent route when it works for you: you get the provider's own pricing page, SLA, and account support.
Before you commit, check four things on the provider's own site:
A gateway gives you one base URL and one key for several providers, which is useful when you want to compare models or avoid managing four separate accounts. Because the wire format is OpenAI's Chat Completions, your existing SDK code usually works with a two-line change.
The catch is that gateways vary enormously in quality. Before you route production traffic, ask:
For reference, NovAI publishes transparency.json (prices, limits, platform fee, upstream disclosure) and a per-model price feed at /china-ai-leaderboard.json. Paid models are passed through at the provider list price with a 1.0x multiplier and no platform fee.
Any OpenAI SDK works. Point the base URL at the gateway and use a model id from its catalogue:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://aiapi-pro.com/v1",
api_key="nvai-...", # from /free/index.html
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="deepseek-v4-flash",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise this in one line: ..."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)
NovAI's free tier needs no credit card: five GLM Flash models, 10 free-model calls per day and 5 requests per minute. Paid usage starts with a $1 minimum top-up on card.
"Model swapping" — a relay quietly serving a cheaper or quantised model under a flagship name — is the main trust risk in this market. You do not need to take anyone's word for it; you can test it yourself in a few minutes:
prompt_tokens against the official endpoint. A different tokenizer shows up as a persistent skew.The open-source canary_check.py script from the awesome-ai-gateway project automates the first two checks against any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. NovAI publishes its own canary results in an issue on that list so anyone can reproduce them.
Not necessarily. Some official platforms require a mainland phone or real-name verification; others accept an international email. OpenAI-compatible gateways generally accept an email or GitHub sign-up. Check the exact platform you plan to use.
It depends on the platform. Some official Chinese API platforms accept foreign cards; others are Alipay/WeChat only. NovAI accepts card payments from a $1 minimum top-up, and also supports USDT (TRC20).
When you call a Chinese model, your prompt is processed by that provider's API, wherever they operate it. Read each provider's data policy, and read your gateway's transparency page if you use one. NovAI states which upstream API each model is forwarded to in /transparency.json.
Run your own checks: compare prompt_tokens against the official endpoint for the same prompt, run exact-answer capability probes, and test long-context retention. Public canary results help, but reproducible local tests are better.
Usually yes for Chat Completions, streaming, tools and JSON mode, because the wire format is OpenAI-compatible. Assistant/Responses APIs and some OpenAI-only features are not available; check per model.
NovAI's free tier needs no credit card: five GLM Flash models (text, vision, image, video), 10 free-model calls per day, 5 requests per minute.
One OpenAI-compatible endpoint for DeepSeek, Qwen, GLM, Kimi, MiniMax and Doubao. Five models are free to call without a credit card.
